What Does Knowing “The Truth About You” Have To Do With Living Your Purpose?

by Leila Reyes on November 15, 2008

He has something to say and he’s sexy!

I watched Marcus Buckingham conduct his Oprah workshop online. Synchronistically, Michelle had just bought his book.  If you remember, I took it from her just before she left for her trip to China.

I ate up every word of, Now, Discover Your Strengths.  I am able to see very clearly that your innate talents when developed into strengths is a perfect venue for your purpose to manifest.  Brilliant!  I say live your purpose in all areas of your life and Marcus is able to give a concrete way of living your purpose at work.  I wrote about my initial experience with Marcus Buckingham and then his staff contacted me offering me a copy of his latest book, “The Truth About You.”

Everything Marcus has to say seems to support living your purpose at work, in a career.  We are taught to deny, hide, or avoid the very truth about ourselves and focus on our weaknesses thinking that they will make us strong.  THEY WON’T.  Focusing on your strengths will make you the strongest.  And from my standpoint focusing on your strengths allows you to engage the energies that allow you to live your purpose.  Underneath everything Marcus teaches he empowers us to do one thing–live an authentic life.

When we are playing to our strengths our purpose will emerge.

I’ve noticed that when we focus on our weaknesses instead of our strengths we may have a hard time doing what we love and going for our dreams.  In order to engage in conscious livelihood, you must stop denying, hiding, or avoiding your passions.  Your passions will inform you of where to invest your energy.  Marcus claims that “your passions are the building blocks of your strengths,” and I couldn’t agree more.  You will grow and develop the most if you focus on your strengths instead of your weaknesses.  A claim Marcus makes that is worth hearing from his own voice.

A perfect resource for Conscious Livelihood.

“The Truth About You” is a box set that has a video, a book, and a memo pad for you to take yourself through the process he teaches on Oprah.  This recent publication is a workbook of sorts and very focused in its content.  I love Marcus Buckingham’s work, because it fits right in with my purpose fetish.  I get it!  Knowing who you are and what makes you tick and what turns you on will naturally lead to a life of purpose and passion.  For this reason, Marcus Buckingham is required reading for my clients who don’t want to spend another 5-10 years chasing their purpose, let alone another minute.  Check it out!  You’ll not be disappointed.

If you want to hear what Marcus has to say, join us on December 5th.

As many of you know, Michelle is running a series on the radio called, “Conscious Livelihood.” The work of Marcus Buckingham supports conscious livelihood in that the more you know about yourself, the easier it will be to choose the activities that lead to passion in the work place.

Come listen to what Marcus has to say about the benefit of knowing the Truth About You!

I strongly believe that our passion can produce a great force that drives us.

2 Pacita November 15, 2008 at 8:19 pm

I, too, firmly believe that focusing on our strengths is a powerful tool for success. However, uncovering our strengths is often not an easy task. Marcus’ book helps in discovering our hidden talents and strengths. Brilliant!

Hi CK,

I liked the first book best – First, break all the rules.

I’m not sure the strengths in the second book suited my way of thinking.

His latest sounds great.

One problem with playing to your strengths is for those of us who are solo-ists or in small business. Marcus’ stuff works well in big corporations. For others the stuff that doesn’t play to our strengths still needs to get done – and if we don’t do it nobody will.

There are various ways to adapt tasks to our strengths – and many ways to collaborate too. But still for those of us at the small end of town, working only on our strengths is sometimes not an option.

I’m in Australia so won’t be listening to the broadcast. Hope you will blog about it.

Raymond, Pacita. I appreciate your comments.

Evan, The broadcast turns into a podcast, so if you like you’ll be able to download it and listen at your convenience, the same as my other radio interviews.

Thanks for the insights.. I often wonder which strengths I’m born with, and which I’ve learned to do so well being in business for myself, that I can’t tell them apart from my natural ones. I’ll be asking your question and many more on the radio.

i am making a note to listen to your radio show. the company i work for has created a whole program around “discover your strengths” and it’s extremely helpful.

maybe i’ll reread the book before your radio show. (memory=sieve)

Raymond, what is the great force that drives you? How did you find it? How do you honor it? How do you keep that force in the drivers seat?

Pacita, did you read the book? What is one of your strengths statements?

Evan, I think one of the points of Marcus’ work is that you don’t adapt your tasks to your strengths, as you engage more in the tasks that invigorate you, you will create more and more days and weeks that you are naturally engaging your innate talents that leave you feeling stronger and stronger… This feels like building momentum instead of losing it…

Michelle, I’m reminded of one main point Marcus makes… These talents are themes that we are born with. When we add skill and knowledge they become strengths. The important thing to remember is that there may be one little piece of an activity that we need to change and that will shift us from feeling drained to feeling invigorated. For example, the size of a group you speak with. One on one may leave you drained, but 1000 will light you up. The task of speaking is the same, but you qualify it to say something like: only to large audiences of at least ___.

Jackie, I’d like to hear how they use it? How have you personally benefited by it? Michelle and I are developing a top secret coaching process and we are making Marcus’ work a pre-requisite read. So, I’d be very interested in what you have to say about your experience. If you’d be open to connecting with me on this topic, send me an e-mail at ck at divinepurposeunleashed.com

Thanks for the article – and I will be looking forward to the radio program.
This subject is one of constant frustration for me – except in my life it has been like this: earning a living versus living your passion. Maybe sometimes you cannot earn a living from your passion?
The strengths and passion keep you moving forward and inspired – and it is very frustrating, even painful to spend your days doing something that is not fulfilling – but sometimes that seems necessary to pay the bills.

8 CK Reyes November 16, 2008 at 4:44 pm

Nan, the main reason that we are making this required reading is that I believe so strongly that it is the key to living your passion. Maybe not over night, but a little more each week you will gear your days toward a passionate life… Marcus shows you how to do that and then we put it into the context of Conscious Livelihood and living your purpose…. I highly recommend it. Did you take a look at the Oprah series? It will give you a nice overview of his work.

Everyone…. after reading the book, shoot off some questions for Michelle to ask Marcus on December 5th.

Hi CK,

The greatest force that drives me are my passion and love. I find it in my work. I honor it with my gratitude, satisfaction and compliment. I give consistently to ensure the persistency of the force.

10 CK Reyes November 18, 2008 at 7:33 am

Raymond, that’s beautiful!

11 Brandon Allen November 18, 2008 at 12:44 pm

Couldn’t agree more on focusing on strengths vs weaknesses. I feel that sometimes we avoid playing to our strengths for fear of standing out or standing fully in your own light in the divine sense. Taking time to reflect on and cultivate your purpose creates a powerful conversation inside of us to achieve at a high level and be the person we were always meant to be.

12 CK Reyes November 18, 2008 at 12:52 pm

Brandon, How has this been true for you? What is one way that you have avoided playing to your strengths? How have you been able to stand fully in your own light? Are there support structures you have in place to keep you standing in your light?

Tell me a little about yourself and the person you are meant to be? What is your purpose and how do you personally stand in the light of who you are?

Gosh, I sure do want to know how other people experience these concepts….

13 Brandon Allen November 18, 2008 at 1:36 pm

CK,

Thanks for the response. The biggest way that I have avoided playing to my strengths in the past is by working in a career where I had success but didn’t enjoy it. Every day in that job absolutely killed my spirit. Fear is what kept me there until I just decided I had had enough and left to do something that played better to who I wanted to be as a person. I faced criticism for this initially but have been able to develop my purpose and work more closely in that purpose.
Here’s what I call my Soul Purpose mission statement: “To be the shepherd for mankind to stand fully in their own light and bring Soul Purpose effectively to the marketplace.” The first step for me which you talk about was getting clear on who I am. This allowed me to stand fully in my light so that I can help others to stand in theirs and do what they love.

As far as support structure. The one thing that I do each day is what we call a “Power Hour”. This is at least 60 minutes each day focusing on Mind, body and spirit. I do this before I do anything else. Some of the activities that I do in this time are: meditation, prayer, gratitude statements, working out (I have been doing triathlons lately), meal planning to make sure I am eating right, reading books that align with my purpose, planning, goal setting etc etc.
This is my daily reset that gets my day started on the right foot every day.

Sorry this is a lot of info but you asked a lot of good questions so I felt compelled to answer them as completely as possible.

Brandon

14 CK Reyes November 19, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Brandon, I love the depth of your response. I am gathering that your Soul Purpose is being expressed in your work… Is that a fair assumption? I’d love to know how you do this. I also love your Power Hour. I’ve noticed that setting an intention sets me up for success. I appreciate your sharing.

15 Carrie, Words To Mouth November 20, 2008 at 10:16 am

Wow, I’m new here…came over from link to my author interview show! Thank you for that ~ I appreciate you and glad to find this Divine Purpose Unleashed community.

16 CK Reyes November 21, 2008 at 10:03 am

Carrie, Michelle will be on the radio with Marcus on Friday Dec 5th. What did you think of his work? Do you have any questions that have been coming up consistently from your readers? I have a ton of questions, but I don’t think Michelle will let me get a word in….

17 MichelleVandepas November 21, 2008 at 11:10 am

CK,
You’d better give me your questions first, and beware, I have control of the MUTE button if you get out of control!

18 CK Reyes November 21, 2008 at 11:47 am

Michelle, I KNEW IT; you do read the things I write! I think I’d better just give you my questions in advance because I LOVE Marcus and I don’t think I can control myself. Of course I could probably talk and talk and I would never know you put me on MUTE! aargh!

19 Carrie, Words To Mouth November 25, 2008 at 6:17 am

Michelle & CK ~ You two have such great energy. I can’t wait to hear the interview…it’s on my calendar!

20 CK Reyes November 25, 2008 at 4:12 pm

Yeah! I can’t wait either, Carrie!
