Ha! You can’t get rid of your weaknesses, so why are you giving it any attention at all?

You think you can get rid of your weaknesses, but you can’t.  You spend time and energy trying to make yourself better in an area you suck at!  This approach will never make you better at what you aren’t good at, it will just make you feel like a failure.  Have you noticed?  Have you ever thought that you should turn your weakness into a strength?  It won’t work.  You need to focus on what you are good at and let go of what you aren’t.  Guess what?  Someone else is good at what you horrendous at doing.  Hire them!

Our strengths our found in living our purpose.

We are strongest when we share our gifts with the world not when we are obsessing over what we don’t do well.  The best way to do make our significant contribution is by developing our natural talents into strengths.  In this process our purpose will manifest more easily and you’ll be happy camper.   You’ll feel more fulfilled.  You’ll experience life as an empowering adventure.  Don’t ask me how, I don’t know.  I just know fulfillment is the result of developing your innate gifts and you can’t do that when you are investing so much energy into what isn’t working.  Focus on what you are naturally good at and your weaknesses won’t get noticed.

You have natural talents.  Find them!

Each one of us has talents that are unique and endearing; they are innate in us.  Developing our talents is what will contribute the most powerfully to our expression.  When we develop our natural talents, they turn into our strengths.  Use your strengths to get ahead, not your weaknesses!  Our purpose is found somewhere in our strengths, not our weaknesses. 

Focus on your strengths not your weaknesses.

I’ve thought about this a lot and then I ran into Marcus Buckingham.  Online!  Do you know him?  He’s real cute.  I watched his segments on Oprah and then I snagged Michelle’s book before she left for China.  She’s only gone for ten days, so I had to read fast.  Marcus talks about Strengths and Weaknesses in his book, Now, Discover Your Strengths. He relates his concepts to the category of work and career, but I see the correlation to living your purpose.  He says to focus on your strengths and manage your weaknesses.  In our culture, we are taught to improve ourselves by improving upon our weaknesses.  Right?  Think about the last time you were told (or thought) that you should get better at something you hate doing.  Marcus doesn’t think focusing on your weaknesses works.  I don’t either!  First you need to know what your strengths are, so get his book and find your strengths.  Get a new book, because it has a code you can use to take a quiz.  This is not your typical personality type test that tells you to go into sales or marketing or pig farming.  It’s innovative!  I’ve already made some obvious discoveries about myself.  I say obvious, but until I learned what my strengths are, I just thought I needed to work on the other stuff.  Not true!

What are your strengths?

One of the exercises Marcus asks his clients to do is to identify the activities that leave them feeling strong and those that leave them feeling weak.  I did the exercise and have a deeper connection and understanding of myself than ever before.  It makes sense to me why I react in certain situations in the way I do.  After reading, watching, meditating, and journaling, I have a strength statement:

I feel strong when I connect with people in deep and meaningful ways!

This statement gives me goose bumps and makes me cry.  I knew this about myself, but not in the context of one of my most endearing strengths.  From this simple statement I understand myself in many circumstances I have found myself in.  Here’s an example:

I’ve always judged myself as incompetent when networking in large groups.  I hate it!  But after claiming one of my strongest themes: RELATOR! I can see why networking has been so difficult for me. I LOVE connecting with people and in large group I feel lost and disconnected, at least until I’ve established a connection.

Here is a description of RELATOR:  It’s all about relationships.  According to Marcus, a person with relator as his strength is comfortable being intimate and will be drawn toward people he already knows.  A superficial connection is spontaneously and instinctively deepened.  An authentic connection is desired.  Vulnerability and risk is evident as the ‘relator’ shares himself entrusting himself to the relationship.

That’s me! Now I know how important it is to understand, not judge, our behavior.  Recently, I attended an event with about 300 people.  I was told to bring LOTS of business cards.  In the first 20 minutes of the presentation, the speaker told us that we had 2 minutes to collect as many cards as we could.  Then he said, “GO!”  Immediately the person next to me asked me for my card.  I immediately responded with, “No!  I want to get to know you first.”  I spent the entire 2 minutes with this one person.  My behavior in this situation was instinctual and spontaneous.  I didn’t even have to think about my response.

At the time I thought I did it all wrong, but today I can see that to connect with others in deep and meaningful ways is instinctual for me.  I don’t have to be something that I am not because the weakness dictates what I should develop.  No!  Connecting is natural and invigorates me.  Someone without my strength would have a different experience and depending on her strength may even be invigorated by the networking process.  Yuck!

Focus on your strengths!

Do you get what I’m saying?  I’ll never rid myself of this weakness (Marcus calls this strength ‘Woo’).  The best I can do is manage my weaknesses.  Maybe I team up with someone who loves to network.  Maybe Michelle is up in front of 10,000 people speaking her heart out, loving every minute of it.  And me?  What am I doing?  Greeting people.  Welcoming them.  Connecting with them.  I love that.  We both get to do what we are naturally good at!  We get to focus on our strengths and what turns us on.  It’s different for each of us!

What do you think?

I want to know who you are and what strengthens you.  I want to support you.  Not you as a group, I am not talking to the group!  I am talking to you!  I want to know you as a person.  When I write, I know I am talking to a large group of people… But that doesn’t do it for me.  I am invigorated by our interaction.  I am strengthened by the connection we make.  Every comment is important to me.  Every person who subscribes means something to me–a connection!

And now I know that everyone isn’t like me.  Guess what?  There is nothing wrong with any of us.  We’ve just been focusing on the wrong doohickey’s.  It’s only when I judge your weakness that I can’t see your strength.  Here is what Marcus has to say about interpretation:

“And for some strange reason when we do have a precise, commonly agreed upon word for a strong pattern of behavior, the word we use often has a negative connotation…[someone] who can’t wait to act?   She is impatient or impulsive.  People who are brilliant at imposing order and structure on the world?  Anal…People who anticipate and are always asking “What if?”  Worriers.  Whichever way wee look at it, we don’t have a rich enough language to describe the wealth of human talent we see around us.”  –Marcus Buckingham Now, Discover Your Strengths.

Getting rid of your weaknesses is a waste of your time!

Does this make sense to you?  You can’t get rid of your weaknesses.  Ever!  But, focusing on your strengths will have a huge impact on your life.  Marcus made a connection with me through his writing and I have transferred that connection to my work.  Your purpose is found in your strengths.  There can be no other way.  My purpose is to teach concepts that empower people to transform their lives.  Someone with strengths other than mine can teach the same concepts, but they’ll do it in a different way.  I need to teach these concept through deep and meaningful connections.  And as I develop my strengths more fully, my purpose will expressed more and more effortlessly.  So will yours.  Give it a try.  And, please….pretty please… let me know how it goes.

One more thing…  I’m NOT a blogger!

I’ve always resisted being called a blogger, and now I know why.  I didn’t believe I could connect as deeply as I instinctively want to.  Ha! Weakness?  No, I can adopt a new perspective and use my strength of ‘relator’ and make the connections I desire.  I am submitting this to problogger.  To connect!

Cut it out!

It’s what runs our lives–when we aren’t conscious of it. Without awareness, it becomes the same story day in and day out; a re-run of all the reasons why you aren’t living your purpose! It’s the who, or what, you blame for your lack of commitment. It’s what you tell yourself so you don’t have to take responsibility for having what you want. Believing Myths, Lies, and Excuses guarantees you one thing. Victimhood! But guess what? I have a secret for you. You can drop the victim mask anytime you choose. Take back your power to create what you consciously desire by giving up all your myths, lies, and excuses.

First you have to identify what you believe

If you haven’t already read our free report on Myths, Lies, and Excuses, do that today. Then give yourself permission to be totally honest with yourself and identify what you are believing, saying, or doing that leaves you feeling like a victim. What thinking do you engage in that leaves you powerless? Disclaimer: if this isn’t you, don’t make it about you. Give yourself permission to identify one way you are playing small by believing myths, lies, and excuses and then shift it for good. Everyone can benefit from this exercise.

Make a decision!

Are you going to use myths, lies, and excuses as your opt out? Or are you going to go for what you want? Even if you don’t know how you’re going to get there? The first step is to admit the truth; then you’ll be standing consciously as the powerful creative force you are. Really check in…

Am I wearing the victim mask?

Ask yourself some of these questions:

• I don’t want to take the responsibility to have what I want in life.
• I choose my fear over my dreams!
• I really don’t want to do what it takes.
• I choose to play small.

When you admit the truth to yourself, then you step out of victim status

If you don’t want to do it, then just say so! But when you use myths, lies, or excuses it makes it seem like you don’t have any control. You do have control! If you don’t want to live your best life, then stop thinking about it, stop investing your time and energy into it, and stop telling people about it. Or if this is your best life and you don’t want the next expression of yourself to emerge, then let it go man. There is nothing wrong with you if you choose to stay in your present manifestation; “saying” you want something different, when you really don’t earns the victim badge.

If you are ready for your next step, this is what will help you take it

Living from myths, lies, and excuses is like telling yourself there is something wrong with you. “I can’t do it because…” However, if you really want to live your best life. If you really do want to step into your next highest expression, then identify your myths, lies, and excuses and commit to never using them again.

Pay attention to how you feel

The way you feel will inform you if you are on the right path. If you feel bad, stuck, or confused, then you most likely engage in myths, lies, and excuses. Give up them up. Tell it like it is and you will notice that you feel better. And the most exciting part of taking your power back is that you start to live a more purpose-filled life. You will find that the choices you currently make will start to shift and you become empowered to create what you do want. Identify where your commitment is and enjoy the endless possibilities that await you.

Here’s the key:

Give up all tolerance for myths, lies, and excuses. Don’t blame anyone or anything for your current situation -including yourself. Taking responsibility for the expression of your purpose means giving up anything that has previously held you back. Identifying the myths, lies, and excuses that you have held in place gives you the awareness to replace them with empowering interpretations.

By now you have probably heard about our report 7 Myths, 8 Lies, and 35 Excuses People Use For Not Living Their Purpose. I have had a slew of dis-empowering myths, lies, and excuses causing me to question my every move. I’ve found that as I gave them up I became empowered to live the life I live today. I want to share a little of my personal journey in working with myths, lies, and excuses.

MYTHS

In the report we shared that myths are unproved stories that we give our power to. One story that I grew up with was this:

…because my mother left me at a young age without saying goodbye, I am insignificant. She felt no connection to me and was better off without me in her life…

I gave a lot of power to this story I told myself. Most of it on an unconscious level. As soon as I was able to identify the story I could create a story around my mother leaving that empowered me. We are making it all up anyway. Why would I want to listen to that old and limiting story? Here is my new story:

On a soul level my mother was supporting me to develop my most valuable qualities of compassion and non-judgment.

I feel good about this new meaning I have to a difficult event in my life. As a result I was able to let go of the pain and grief surrounding the event and invite in a deep appreciation for my mother.

LIES

I have told myself many lies over the 4 decades I’ve been on this earth. Here are some:

• I am unworthy to have what I want
• I can’t take care of myself

These lies left me feeling powerless. Because of these lies I played small for much of my life. I never felt capable of caring for myself and always needed to feel secure. Since I never did I didn’t take many risks. I remember staying glued to the back porch because I was too afraid to venture into the dark. As I replaced these lies with truths, I started to take risks and discover what I wanted for my life. Today I feel empowered to move forward into the unknown.

Excuses

I have found that excuses are extremely limiting. They almost guarantee that we won’t have anything we want in life. Here are some of my favorite…

1. I don’t know how
2. I will fail
3. I will say the wrong thing

The last one, “I will say the wrong thing,” has kept my mouth shut for many years. I am saying a lot these days, and guess what? I do say the wrong thing. All the time. Not everyone likes what I have to say. Some people hate what I have to say. But I had to make a decision. Was I going to live my life from the fear of saying the wrong thing (maybe even hurting someone or making someone mad), or was I going to allow for my fullest expression. It hurt too much to keep quiet. Today, I speak freely. Sometimes my throat still tightens up, but I will never allow it to silence me again. I have too much to say and speaking is a big part of how I live my purpose.

How can you empower yourself to live a fuller expression?

When you uncover the myths, lies, and excuses that have been stifling your creative expression, you will be well on your way. If you can’t do it on your own, then get the support you need. I needed a lot of support as I made changes in my internal world. I still hire a coach to support my next highest expression to emerge.

At the beginning of the report, we shared that intuition is a direct perception of truth independent of reasoning; intuition is knowledge that is untaught. In other words, intuition is what you know. Not what you have been told. Intuition is what nags at you internally when you know you need to take an action. Intuition is what tells you that you have just heard a truth from an outside source.

The most powerful support I received was in trusting my own intuition

All of the work I do includes an element of empowering others to first find, and then trust their inner voice. As you trust more you will find that your spiritual gifts start to emerge. The report and subsequent trainings, classes, and workshops are no different. Michelle and I both intend to provide the support that allows for you to connect with your inner wisdom and then take the actions that are generated by your intuitive heart.

What is expectation?

For some of us it is a knowing that we will fail. For others it is a depression that permeates our lives. Still, for others, it is an unconscious belief that what we have to share with the world is worthless. Negative expectations seem to take the drivers seat without our conscious awareness. And I am here to wake you up and say STOP IT! Now!

I don’t want to assume, but just in case…

How long have you been holding yourself back out of your negative expectations? We could call them your fears. Have you ever thought to yourself, “I’m not good enough,” or, “I’ll surely fail,” or “It’s too much work,” and then given up on yourself? and your dreams? What does your internal dialog sound like? I bet it’s rougher than my powerful request for you to stop holding yourself back. Maybe your negative expectations have been the creative force behind your endeavors. If they have been, you can change if through simple but powerful choices you make on a daily basis. But…

Are other people’s negative expectations holding you back?

Maybe you share your dreams and instead of getting the extra excitement and support you hoped for, you discover you’ve entered a war zone. All your dreams get shot down by people who think they are helping you. They point out what could go wrong or why it won’t work out for you. Again, some simple choices you can make that will ensure that your negative expectations don’t run your life any longer.

Here are 3 steps to shifting your negative expectations

If you follow these steps, you will be well on your way to shifting your negative expectations and move yourself toward expressing your life purpose.

1. Know what it is that you want. I know this sounds simple, but really it can be quite challenging. I had everyone else’s ideas in my head for so long, I couldn’t even hear my own voice. So this step is crucial. Invest the time it takes to get quiet, filter out everyone else’s ideas from your own, and be totally and brutally honest with yourself. Ask: What do I really want. And then listen. It doesn’t do any good to ask and then not listen to your own wisdom.
2. Trust. Trust that your answer is your soul guiding you to an incredible life. Imagine that you won’t be happy until you have whatever your intuition told you. When we know what we want, we often talk ourselves out of it. Oh, that’s too big. Oh, what will they think? A common way that we get in our own way is that we know the answer, but we don’t listen to it. We discount it. But, you will feel it in your heart. Don’t talk about it yet, at least to naysayers. Let it permeate your thick walls of negative expectations. Ultimately, what you want is for you (yes, even if what we want effects everyone else as well).
3. Open your heart and consciously look for how the universe is supporting your desire. Expect it. Look for how the universe is guiding you to what you want, even in adversity. Recently, I read an article over on Remarkable Communication and Sonia Simone said, “We could try to be a little more aware as we move through our days–leave a little room open for the possibility that something extraordinary could happen…expect better out of our lives…expect greatness from our work…expect passionate fanaticism…expect personal lives and professional lives that nourished and enriched one another.”

You will find what you look for!

You will find what you look for whether it’s negative or positive. The choice is up to you. What do you want to look for? Even in the most traumatic and the most dramatic of circumstances. What if you were to look through the positive expectation colored glasses? How would your life be different? How would you see possibility where previously all you saw were obstacles? How might you be more willing to share your spiritual gifts? Many people have benefited from the death of Polly Klaas. Simply because of the choices that her father made after the tragedy.

Why Bother?

Most people I have encountered want to make a difference in the world. Mr. Klaas used the death of his daughter to make a difference in the world. He could have made a lot of other choices that disempowered him, but he made a powerful contribution of his time and energy to help other kids be safe and return home to their families. Most people have lots of reasons why they aren’t using their gifts to make a difference. Most people I know feel bad about themselves when they aren’t contributing.

Your spiritual gifts are your contribution.

Living your purpose does not have to be a struggle. You don’t have to make something up, you only have to check in with your heart. You will not be led astray if you listen and act on those spiritual promptings. Although sometimes it might feel like it. For example, when it feels like things aren’t going your way. Ahem…. What if the bumpy roads were part of waking you up? Would you really be motivated to live your purpose more fully if things were easy for you? I don’t think so.

Your blissful happiness can only be found in living your purpose.

If you aren’t finding happiness inside of your own heart, sharing and contributing your spiritual gifts that originate deep inside of you, then you aren’t living your purpose. And if you aren’t living your purpose then I bet you’re struggling in several areas of your life. What if the gift inside of your struggles and unhappiness are the motivation to change your life? What if without the pain, you wouldn’t be willing to make the necessary changes that bring you bliss? How much pain is present for you? Maybe that could be the indication of the changes you need to make in your life to align with your spiritual gifts.

It really is very simple

Take the ego out of your internal dialog. Stop listening to all the reasons why you shouldn’t take the big leap of faith and do what you have always wanted to do. And trust that your intuition will lead you in the right direction. If you can’t seem to accomplish these shifts on your own, then get help. Consider it a gift from the universe. We are always available to support you, but it doesn’t have to be us. There is a lot of support available, find it. Gift yourself with it. How much longer are you going to let negative expectations, or anything else, stand between you and your dreams? The world needs you! The world needs your spiritual gifts. We aren’t complete without them all manifested!

My purpose is to empower others!

When I realized that coaching is one way that I live my purpose, I started coaching everyone who would be coached. I gifted people with pro-bono sessions every working day. I coached on the phone and walking down the street. I sat at tables in restaurants with other people in the hopes of coaching someone. I coached homeless people in the park!

I even coached Michelle before we started working together. Can you believe that? I met her in a parking lot and wham! Instant client. Maybe she’ll write a post about her experience of being empowered by me (hint hint).

I made one serious mistake!

I coached my partner, my sweetie. In the beginning it was fun, but after a while I started hearing things like, “Okay, Coach!” and, “Where’s my girlfriend?” You get the picture? 2 O’clock in the morning if he wanted to talk, I coached. Danger! Danger! Will Robinson…..

This, I found out became an irritation instead of a joy. Well, I had to look underneath what was happening. Going back to my purpose, which is to empower, I found that coaching someone without asking permission was dis-empowering. Woah! Not me! I am here to empower. To be doing the exact opposite was an eye opener.

So, I told him to get his own coach!

Whew! What a relief! But it became clear to me that my intention to empower was getting lost in the relationship. It doesn’t work. I thought I was living my purpose, but I was just irritating him. Now, he has his own coach and we can talk about the concepts of coaching in a much more empowering way–for both of us. Interestingly enough, I feel more empowered by him having his own coach. And, I think he enjoys me more and appreciates what I do in a deeper way. I haven’t been hearing any of the little comment any more either.

What made me aware of irritating others while living their Divine Purpose?

One morning I was sitting on my back patio, writing, and I heard organ music! Okay, I have nothing against organ music, but it was 7:30 in the morning–on a Monday! (If organ music is your thing please forgive me.) I thought I was non-judgmental, but I thought, “No one should be allowed to play organ music before 10am or after noon on Sunday.” I even thought that we should get a law passed. I feel so ashamed. Because, I thought what if there were laws passed that said I couldn’t coach someone in a restaurant? I would die!

3 keys to living your purpose without irritating others!

1. Don’t force your purpose onto others. Some people don’t want to listen to organ music, just as some people don’t want to be empowered to live their best lives. In my situation it is appropriate to ask permission to coach someone.  NOTICE: if you are on this site, or come on to one of my calls, it is implied that you want to be empowered and I do that through coaching. I assume you WANT to be coached. (And I am going to do more of that, so beware! and if you join our membership site, mega doses of structure and accountability are yours!) There is not much joy for me to empower you and then say to you, “Ha! Now you’re empowered!” I want you to see it coming.
2. Live your purpose in all of your life. Living your purpose does not mean that you leave it at the office, or that you live it only outside of your work. When I exclaim to the world that my purpose is “to empower” I need to keep that in my awareness always. How do I empower my daughter to take responsibility for her own life? Even at 10? How do I empower myself to go for my dreams? I also need to be on the lookout for ways that I am living the opposite, like coaching someone who doesn’t want to be coached by me. One way to stay on track is to be willing to be wrong and be honest with yourself, even if it hurts.
3. Don’t let anyone dissuade you from living your purpose. I realized that whoever was playing the organ needed to. The desire must be strong for him or her to play that early in the morning with no regard to people who don’t have to get up and go somewhere else to work. This person is committed to their purpose and that’s what it takes to be happy. Our commitment to allowing the Divine to flow through us. One of my gifts from the Divine is that I an a terrific listener. I can spot the places where you are not living up to your potential or where you are out of integrity with yourself and I say it. I don’t judge it as wrong or bad, I just say it. This is my gift and I use that gift in my coaching relationships. I am not going to let fear stop me. I am not going to let projection stop me. I am committed to using my gifts to empower people to move into their greatness. I am changing the world and it starts with your inner world. Just like the organ music. I hope nothing I say will stop this organ player from playing. (Disclaimer: if I find out it’s a CD, I take everything back!)

What support do you need in sharing your spiritual gifts?

One of my agenda’s is that you share your gifts. Powerfully! Where are you playing small? Where do you need to step into a higher expression of yourself? What obstacles stand between you and your living your purpose? What are your successes? What support do you need to be 100% committed to sharing that spark of desire in your heart? That spark is from the Divine. You wouldn’t have the desire inside of you if you didn’t have the ability to express it in this lifetime.

2. Hire a coach. It doesn’t have to be me, but a coach will support you in finding your purpose and manifesting it into the world.
3. I came across a great website. Check out Tim Kelley. I signed up for his e-zine. He has techniques for finding your purpose. I don’t care who you hire, or what support you get, but gift yourself with the support. You deserve it!
