Melissa, I love your view on this. Michelle and I are developing an e-course and one of the lessons is called, "The Roles People Play," and highlights what you say that our purpose is not the roles we play. Your purpose can be expressed through a role, but what happens when the role is swished out from under you? If you grasp this concept, then you aren't lost without a purpose. Live your purpose in all areas of your life. Like your example of raising a child... Looking at your roles you play though the lens of "living my purpose," will allow you to lead a more purpose-filled life.
Thank you Melissa.
ps. I might like to refer to your comments in our course and book. Is that okay with you?

For me I have found that although my roles have changed throughout my life, at the very core my purpose has always been to help people in need. I have helped people by serving them in an administrative position, as their manager and today as a writer and speaker. I have always volunteered. Perhaps people need to remember that purpose and roles are not the same thing. When I have coached people on this topic they often start trying to define their purpose by saying things like "my purpose is to write", "my purpose is to to be a doctor" and we have to pull back and look deeper into those roles to find the actual purpose.

For a while my role was mother and wife and my purpose was to help my newborn child. At first I felt like I wasn't fulfilling my potential, but then I realized that I was doing the greatest service of all, I was helping a new human acclimate to this life and form a healthy body and mind. Then I was a-okay.

Now onto my true core....hmmmm.. to me, my true core is who I am without this body. Who is the soul that entered this body. Now as to the very private "me", that would be the very basic combination of my true core and its life in this body. My fear when I expose her is that people will find out how vulnerable I truly am. So many people have come to rely on me to be strong and have the answers that sometimes I worry that they would be disappointed if they knew how delicate my true self really is. Shhhh...let's keep this our little secret, LOL.

Michelle, I guess maybe I'm thinking that when you are living your purpose it is easier to deal with the ups and downs of life because you know what you're about. And I agree that our attitude is a huge part of how we perceive the circumstances in our life.

Corinne, Does this fit for your purpose? In the work you do and appreciation you feel in teaching? And your way of being in the world? How so?

Lance.
The real you expressed will be much more wonderful to experience than all the things you've done to cover it up to get something you want or think you need. What if you knew for certainty what I know: that being true to your true core was the quickest and surest way to what you really desire in life?

I've heard it said that when you can speak your truth out loud with no fear of loss or judgment then you've arrived. I've thought that means taking risks, because not everyone will like who I am. But I've discovered two things about that: 1. I've decided that I would rather have my friends like me for who I authentically am. ALL of who I am. And it's not all pretty. and 2. If I can speak my truth without fear then there aren't really any risks of loss there right? It's the in between that feels like risk taking...fear that I won't be liked or I will offend someone with my writing or that I say the wrong thing or I'm misunderstood blah blah blah....

Here's the natural coach coming out in me. I can't stop her..... Okay, I surrender....Tell me more about what you fear it might mean for you in exposing your true core... BTW this is an opportunity for you to be vulnerable. Notice the thoughts and feelings you have when you consider exposing your true core. What does 'true core' mean to you?

Evan, So when you engage your challenges with depth and intimacy, it gets easier.... If your purpose is to shed light and you are going about your day shedding light, even on yourself it seems that the challenges that arise would be easier for you than if you were shedding say...darkness. So, when you are engaged in shedding light your life will run smoother because you are aligned with your purpose and the sense of fulfillment you feel will carry you through the rough times.

Hi CK,

My life purpose: to shed light.

The closest categories are something like: therapeutic-teaching or therapeutic-teacher.

I think it is intimacy or depth of contact that is deeply nourishing (we don't need it all the time necessarily - just as we don't need to eat all the time: unless we have been starved until now perhaps). I think this means that 'life will be easier' and 'life can get harder' are both true: life gets harder because there are different challenges - different ones which are more unusual and so there is less guidance on availabe; and life gets easier because the new challenges mean engaging at depth and with intimacy and so the process can be nourishing, even when difficult.

Read Evans last blog post..<a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Wellbeingandhealthnet/~3/390409288/" rel="nofollow">Simple and Practical</a>

Your secret - I'm getting there - to where I don't compare myself, and really let my real me be expressed. To be honest, it's not easy for me. It's not easy to feel vulnerable about exposing my true core. For when I do, I am opening myself up. And I fear what that might mean.

Thanks for sharing your purpose, CK. For in doing that, it helps me to believe I can do that as well.

This is such a beautiful and true statement.

"When you know what your purpose is, you will stop the struggle to find what is missing in your life. Here’s another secret: When you unveil your purpose you can surrender to the most natural way for you to be in this world."

I did a self esteem volunteer program for the Chicago Courts for prostitutes. I did it for five years.

At the end of each session, I gave thanks for the priveledge. It nourished me.

They were the smartest women I ever met. They had to be to stay alive!t

Hi CK,
As always I love reading your perspective on Living Your Life Purpose. But I agree that I don't agree with you. Life is NOT always easier when you are living your purpose.

When you are living your purpose you WILL be called to move outside your comfort zone, to try new things, grow and stretch - never easy for anyone.

There is still all the C$%*P that goes on.. Heartbreak, betryal, death, sickness and the stresses of life.

So, life won't necessarily be easier. That part depends upon your attitude toward the stresses, the stretches and the challenges.

BUT, you will feel more fulfilled, and less prone to search for answers outside yourself when you are in touch with your purpose.
